Battle Ground Public Schools is continuing its 1:1 computing initiative, expanding to include all 3rd through 12th grade students. Each student in these grades will be assigned a Chromebook to use not only during the school day, but also to take home until the end of the school year. 3rd-5th grade students will have access to a 1:1 environment using classroom carts, but will not take their Chromebooks home. Students will be responsible for their device just as they would be for a textbook, and the Chromebook will be theirs to use for as long as they attend a school within the Battle Ground district, excluding summers. It enhances the learning experience by allowing students to complete tasks at home and share their work with family members. This program is being instituted as a means to promote achievement and provide for flexible learning opportunities.
We live in an increasingly connected world and we know that students today learn differently than we did. It is time we look forward to what can be and not teach as we were taught. One to one computing provides us with possibility. One device per child establishes technology as the tool it is, no different than the textbook, the pencil, and the paper. It simply is another way our children learn. We are in a different place technologically than we were 5 - 10 years ago. Computers are less expensive, easier to maintain, smaller, and faster than just a short time back. They provide us with tools that help us to be creative, to collaborate, to communicate anytime, anywhere an on any device and make learning accessible for everyone.
Teachers engaged in in-person full-day training sessions to help integrate Chromebooks into their classrooms successfully. These trainings highlight everything from technology standards and frameworks to engaging programs and lesson planning. The slideshows for the last two years the workshops were held are embedded below. Each slides presentation includes many clickable links to more resources and activities to check out.
